“I Had A Good Life”
Margaret and Bernard Reilly’s journey was a tapestry of love, adventure, and resilience. From high school sweethearts to the proud parents of ten, their life together was a blend of joy and bittersweet moments, underscored by lifelong friendships and unwavering faith. Their shared adventures continued even as their world grew smaller, with their home becoming a sanctuary of cherished memories and a hub for extended family.
Their mantra, “I had a good life,” echoed through their days. They faced health challenges bravely, my father entrusting us with my mother’s care before undergoing surgery himself all the while thinking might this be it? My mother’s fall and subsequent hospitalization offered insight into their potential future for everyone, reinforcing their determination to stay in their home until the end. Our family rallied around them, coordinating visits, and providing constant love and support as needed. As their journey neared its end, I found myself unwittingly fulfilling the role of an End-of-Life Doula, offering advocacy, companionship, and supporting family members when I wasn’t able to be present.
Their transition taught me the importance of proper closure and respect for a life well-lived, or even just lived. Witnessing their reflections on the past, coupled with their mantra “I had a good life,” underscored the richness of their journey. My mother’s impatience for her time to come after her beau passed, and my father’s trust in us to care for her, illustrated their unwavering bond. Inspired by their experience, I felt compelled to move towards advocacy for a good death for all - to offer others education, companionship, and space as they navigate their own journey.
In honoring those moving on, we find a path to healing and a deeper connection to our own humanity. Margaret and Bernard’s story is a testament to the beauty of a life lived with love, and the peace that comes from a well-supported farewell. Their legacy inspires us to cherish every moment and to advocate for a compassionate end-of-life experience for all.
